Skin Care Tips for Older Adults

As we age, we see many changes in our bodies. Our hearing can get worse, we can’t read the fine print, we may have trouble with digestion, walking, and our skin changes, too.

With a proper diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle, we can age more gracefully. While some aspects of aging are inevitable, we can take measures to keep our skin looking healthier.

Tips to Reduce the Appearance of Aging

Fine wrinkles and lines will form around our eyes, mouth, and forehead. But there are easy ways to reduce the appearance of aging.

1.    Stay Hydrated

When our skin is dry, it looks much older than it needs to. Drinking enough water is highly recommended to keep our bodies functioning as they should and it helps to fill in the lines on our skin.

This includes eating food that contains water, like fresh fruit and vegetables. Try to avoid foods with a high sugar or sodium level, as that will contribute to drying out your skin.

2.    Avoid The Elements

The sun, the wind, the cold winter air, all of these take a real toll on our skin. Wear sunscreen and coverings when you are outside in the summer. Cover your face in cold weather, and on highly windy days.

3.    Moisturize

Keeping your body hydrated through fluids is a great idea, but only half the battle. You need to apply a good moisturizer, as well. Creams and lotions can help rejuvenate your skin and reduce the look of lines.

Use moisturizer after a shower or bath, before and after you are exposed to the elements, and whenever your skin feels tight or dry. Use it all over, and you may want a different cream for your face, to avoid irritation around your eyes.

4.    Avoid Harsh Soap

The soap or body wash you choose can also make a big difference. Some can contain chemicals and other harsh ingredients. Find one that contains moisturizers or added ingredients to help soothe and heal dry skin.

This is particularly important for your face. Some soaps can cause irritation and you may even develop a rash. A cleanser designed to gently clean your face with no chemicals, dyes, or perfumes, is recommended.

5.    Avoid Hot Baths and Showers

If your bath or shower water is too hot, it will remove all the naturally occurring protective oils from your skin. It might be relaxing but try to take the temperature down a bit to avoid drying your skin too severely.

6.    Limit Caffeine, Nicotine, and Alcohol

If you still smoke, why? After all the things we know about the dangers of smoking, even with all the health warnings, it is still one of the worst things you can do for your skin.

If you need to have that cup of coffee in the morning, try to limit how much you have. Switch to herbal teas for breaks and throughout the day. Caffeine dried out your entire body.

Excessive alcohol will also dry you out. Just like coffee, it can sap all the moisture from your body, leaving your skin looking pale and dry. With coffee and alcohol, limit yourself and take it with plenty of water, as well.

Short of surgery, there is no miracle for aging skin. But, taking care of your skin can certainly help reduce the look of aging. Healthy skin will make you feel better about yourself, as well.
